Just like last post's rising stars, Vixx, Nine Muses is also a group that has been on the move. Crafted around Sweetune's signature sound, the formerly struggling group has been improving with every comeback and now that they are finally back to 9 members, they are poised to make big jumps on the girl group ladder. As their name implies, the group consists of nine members all of whom have their own strengths but all share certain model-like qualities. I would classify Nine Muses more as a woman group instead of a girl group because they have an encompassing mature concept and sound. For ease of describing everyone, I will try to group them together based on their roles within the group.
Unfortunately, the vocal department in this group has something to be desired but they utilize what they have spectacularly. The most talented in the group is Sera. The leader (correct me if I am wrong?) and one of the designated English speakers, Sera has the richest voice and the group and can hit some of the high notes. Her only downfall is that she can occasionally go nasally but overall she is very competent and a great addition to the group. Following her in the vocals department is Hyemi. Imagine her as the groups Raina. She can hit the high notes well but otherwise her voice is a bit soft but nonetheless pleasant. Following her, is Hyuna. Hyuna's strengths definitely lies in her timbre and while she may not be the best at belting notes, her voice rides the fine line between softness while still being deep and rich. Rounding out the vocal unit is Kyungri, arguably the group's sexiest member and the one with the most potential to go solo. Her vocals are deep and can become nasal if she tries to reach very high but they are definitely soothing and blend with the rest of the group's. Although none of the members have abilities on the level of Davichi or Sistar to name a few groups (lets face it, not many do), the four members each have they own strengths and the lines are divided wisely to allow each of them to capitalize on what they can do well.
The rap unit of the group is probably one of my favorites right now for a kpop girl group. Comprised of Leesaem, Euaerin, and Eunji, the rap unit is talented and are able to make the segments they are given memorable and exciting. Leesaem was featured a lot more during the group's earlier works and now is primarily a sub-vocalist but her raps in 'News' and 'Ticket' were intense and allowed Leesaem to justify her position as one of the lead rappers. Euaerin is (was) the face of the group as well as the most featured rapper. Her rapping has spunk and attitude as well as being rhythmically enticing. Her raps in 'Dolls' and 'Wild' are probably the best raps in female kpop this year. Eunji started out as a sub-vocalist and the lead dancer but since 'Dolls' has taken Leesaem's place as one of the group's top rappers. Moving Eunji to being a rapper was a great decision because her voice was a bit lower than typical and is more suited toward the intense raps than the soft singing. Also, being the dancer of the group, she had a great understanding of rhythm and is able to apply it better to rapping than singing.
Rounding out the group is Minha and Sungah. I have very little to say about Minha. She's pretty enough but her voice is very light and often gets lost in the background. Sungah is the group's newest member and also another English speaker. She hasn't had many lines yet so it's hard to judge precisely but she shows some vocal promise as her voice seems to have some depth.
The group's debut track was 'No Playboy' and please can we pretend that this song never happened? Its the only bad song that Nine Muses has ever promoted and bad is an understatement. Autotune is overused to the extent that the song lacks anything that would suggest that it was actually sung by humans and the song itself is bland and monotonous. I don't want to spend much time on this mistake so let's just move on.
Having lost three members and gained Hyuna, the group partnered with their now long time producer Sweetune (Kara, some Rainbow, some Boyfriend, Infinite, etc.) for their comeback with the disco inspired 'Figaro'. This song showed massive improvements in the group's vocal abilities as well as the quality of their material. The song is pure disco awesomeness and actually sounds like it could have come from the 70's. This was one of the most important comebacks for the then struggling septet. This proved that the group could get good material and that they had some talent and they weren't the lingerie wearing group with a boring song. I personally loved 'Figaro' because it allowed Sweetune to go full out 70's and 80's which is what inspires the majority of the sounds in their tracks. 'Figaro' is crazy yet neat and has a very defined identity, something the group severely needed.

With the addition of Kyungri, Nine Muses later came back with 'News'. I LOVE 'NEWS'. It is one of my favorite Sweetune songs of all time and it is just three minutes perfection. It is melodic, dynamic, hectic, and intense. The background, as per Sweetune's style, is very synth heavy but incredibly well thought out. At times the backing track matches the melodies and at times it breaks away adding urgency and excitement. I can't forget that the rap portions saw the rise of the awesomeness of Leesaem and Euaerin. If I wasn't such a fan of the song, I might be a bit more coherent but 'News' is too amazing.
Following the increase int he group's success that came with 'News', Nine Muses released their follow up track 'Ticket'. Ticket saw the group's music video qualities start to improve, that is they weren't funded with the change found under the couch cushions. On top of this, the song was incredibly catchy and the choreography was relevant! Like most of their prior releases, this song was pure Sweetune pop (getting the drift that Sweetune made the group what it is? It's pretty much true) and featured some of the sounds you would expect from such a release. Probably the best part of the song is the end when the electric guitar starts playing wildly and it entrances me every time. This song, along with 'News', helped establish Nine Muses as a viable group that had potential.
Earlier this year, Nine Muses finally matched their name with the addition of Sungah and released their most successful song to date, 'Dolls'. 'Dolls' saw the group break into the Dark Muses (Hyuna, Kyungri, Eunji, Sungah) and the Light Muses (Sera, Leesaem, Euaerin, Hyemi, Minha). While the two didn't actually do anything other than wear different outfits, this started giving the individual members identities even if it is just the beginning 'who are the sexy/cute ones?'. This was a smart move because for a group this large, it can be really easy for the members to get lost in the crowd and while this was not much, it did set up the members to start showing their personalities and while this was very minute, I definitely now imagine the dark muses as sexier that the light muses so I guess the plan was a success. The song itself took the group in a more mature direction with the overwhelming jazzy feel to the song. This song has been the most important since 'Figaro' because it finally showed what Nine Muses is capable of and defined their image as grown women. I forgot to say how awesome this song is. It's pretty awesome.

Most recently, the muses went through their mandatory sexy concept that every group must do if they want to make it big. With frantic synths flying around the entire song and with the best girl group rap breaks of the year placed over Sweetune dubstep, what is there not to love? The group managed to be very seductive while not edging too far into raunchy (with one or two exceptions) and further progress their image as a woman group. Overall, the song is great and it helps further establish the group's image and Sweetune sound.
In all honesty, Sweetune is to thank for saving this group from irrelevancy. They provided the group with great material that matched the desired image and did it consistently without fail. They provided a musical identity and sound which is as important as the members of the group itself.
Now that Nine Muses has a strong foundation, I hope they start expanding their activities to start growing their fanbase and comeback soon because lets face it, all but one of their songs has been unimaginably outstanding.
